Since I was looking for a potential filming location to shoot some replacement scenes for One Hit Master, Shaun suggested a place. He said the the location requires some rock climbing. Once we got there, he went up a rock path. I went up an incline with rock + sand. I was the one who made the mistake. For every three steps I took, I got pushed back two by the sand. For every one step I took, he moved five.

By the time I decided I wanted to take an alternate path to get to the location over the mountain, I was exhausted. I tried going down, and this is when I ran into trouble. I tumbled down twice. I decided to give up on making it to the top after my first tumble. Before the second tumble, I tossed my backpack with $4000 worth of equipment down the mountain because the weight was enough to hamper me to the point where I wasn't comfortable with climbing down. Fortunately, all my equipment still work. The backpack is a $40 XBOX backpack with a LOT of padding, made by A.L.S. Industries. It more than did its job today by protecting my equipment.

As for myself, I didn't escape from the experience injury-free. However, the worst damage I took were cuts, bruises, and some hit to my pride. I consider myself very fortunate I didn't crack open my skull, I didn't lose any limbs or fingers, I didn't lose my eyeball (or two), nor did I hit my teeth. While I'm in some level of pain, none of my injuries require the attention of a doctor. While I'm not happy about not getting much accomplished today in terms of filming, I'm very happy about only suffering minor injurues.

Click HERE to see what my injuries look like.

Shaun was apologetic for leading me into the situation which resulted in me getting hurt and the fact we didn't get much filming done. I told him I was happy for getting away from the experience with only minor injuries. Seriously, crap like this happens. This is just happened to be one of those days. I live and deal with it.

Here are some pics I took from the 60% point of the mountain before I went flying down:

----- ANNOUNCEMENT -----

Rejection letter from Comic-Con

Back in April, I submitted a first draft edit of One Hit Master and I wasn't entirely happy with it. However, I wanted to submit *something* so I put together my first edit and rushed too much. The movie was rejected for the Comic-Con Film Festival but not for the reason I expected.

"We're looking for a movie that tells a story. Your movie is just a series of scenes put together."

While I wasn't surprised it was rejected, the reason given wasn't the best reason. There are parts of the movie which moves forward at a fast pace but they do tell a story. There are parts I introduce certain characters which could be interpreted as, "just a series of scenes put together." There's a certain storytelling style which can be interpreted as, "just a series of scenes put together." I can think of tons of other reasons for rejection and I can also overanalyze what I did wrong in a million places, which will get me nowhere. A MUCH BETTER reason would have been to tell me the movie looked rushed, didn't appear to be the final version of the movie, and it needed polish.

If what I got was a "politically correct" reason to reject the movie, it sucks. I would have preferred a much better explanation for the rejection or no explanation at all.

The point is, I can't please everybody and I obviously didn't please the selection committee.

However, I don't consider this a setback at all. Even before the rejection letter, I wasn't happy with the version I submitted to Comic-Con. I rushed it to meet the deadline and it showed. I need to add more polish. I was planning to reshoot some scenes anyway and whatever the selection committee's prejudices were, I'll ignore them and take care of the business I need to attend to in an attempt to make the final version of the movie as polished as feasibly possible. Thanks to the rejection, I won't subject more people to the "crap" version.

This is where the "big" announcement comes in. While I'll polish One Hit Master as much as I can, it *IS* my first movie. There's going to be a huge difference in quality between One Hit Master and Film of Five Rings. Film of Five Rings will be a much better movie, simply because I'm a much more experienced filmmaker now than I was two and a half years ago. I'll still try to show One Hit Master at another local convention, for free, to the audience if I can. In terms of selling the movie on DVD, I've decided on the following. If and when a distribution deal is struck, the DVD will be a One Hit Master and Film of Five Rings double pack. Film of Five Rings will be the main movie but the paying audience will be able to see my earlier work at no additional charge. I originally considered selling them separately.

I stole the double pack idea from a certain filmmaker I'm trying to recruit into the coalition. ^^;

Film of Five Rings will be fantastic. Knowing what I know now, I can envision how the movie will turn out. I couldn't do this with One Hit Master when I started. Even today, I was wondering about the quality of how the final version of the movie will be like and if it'll be good enough to sell by itself. I no longer need to worry about that at all.

For the final version of One Hit Master, I'll add additional scenes I currently don't have at the moment so the movie will easily be more than an hour long. What better bonus material is there than to have an entire feature length movie of the director's earlier work provided to the customers at no extra cost to them? Both movies will include hilarious outtakes as well.

The rejection letter was a blessing in disguise. Thanks to the rejection letter, I now have a "stolen" marketing idea to eventually help sell the movies to distributors.
